A container terminal in the outer harbour served by four modes of transport (inland waterway, sea, rail and road), has been in operation in the port of Brussels since 2003. It is linked by shuttle to the port of Antwerp several times a week, and has seen significant growth since then, with a total of some 18,000 TEUs handled in 2010.
Carcoke
A major project in progress at the port of Brussels is the one commissioned by the Brussels-Capital region. It involves the clean-up and development of the former coking plant of Carcoke, historically one of the most polluted in Brussels. Once rehabilitated, this site will be home to a logistics centre served by inland waterway. Working alongside the port of Brussels authority, as a joint venture, is the company Katoen Natie-Jan De Nul-Envisan.
